Mar Jose Kalluvelil

Mar Jose Kalluvelil was born on November 15, 1955 at Thottuva near Kuravilangad, in the Eparchy of Palai, India - as the youngest son of Joseph and Annamma. He has four brothers. At the age of four, his family moved to Jellipara, in the Eparchy of Palghat, India.
After completing High School studies, he joined St. Mary’s Minor Seminary, Thrissur. Major Seminary formation was at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Kottayam, India where he received his Bachelors Degree in Philosophy and Theology. He was ordained priest on December 18, 1984 by His Excellency Mar Joseph Irimpen, the first Bishop of Palghat. Fr. Jose began his priestly ministry at Fathima Matha Church as Asst. Parish Priest and Director of St. Joseph’s Boys Home at Agali. After one year he was appointed Vicar of 3 parishes in Thavalam Forane. In 1989 he was appointed Director of Catechism Department in the Eparchy of Palghat where he served for 12 consecutive years. During this period he was also the Parish Priest at 3 other parishes: Panthalampadam, Olavakod and Ottapalam. In addition, he served the Eparchy in various other capacities like Diocesan Consultor, Founder Director of Kerala Catholic Students League, Director of Holy Childhood and Bible Apostolate. In 2001, Fr. Jose was sent to Rome for higher studies. He completed his licentiate in “Theology of Human Mobility” from Pontifical Urban University and Doctorate in “Family Catechesis” from Pontifical Salesian University, Rome. Back from Rome he served as Parish Priest of St. Antony’s Church Kottayi, and Fathima Matha Church Kallekad for one year. In 2007 Fr. Jose Kalluvelil was appointed Vicar of St. Raphael’s Cathedral Palghat, Manager of St. Raphael’s Higher Secondary School and Diocesan Consultor. After five years, in 2012, he was transferred to
St. Thomas Forane Church Kanjirapuzha where he worked for one year. In 2013 he was sent to Canada for the pastoral care of St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Community, Toronto. On August 06, 2015 he was appointed Exarch of the newly erected Apostolic Exarchate for the Syro-Malabar Faithful in Canada and Titular Bishop of Tabalta by his Holiness Pope Francis. He was ordained Bishop on September 19, 2015 by His Beatitude Mar George Cardinal Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church.
August 06, 2015, was the golden day God chose to reveal His amazing plan for the Syro-Malabar Catholics in Canada announcing the establishment of the Exarchate and appointment of Mar Kalluvelil as Exarch, who was indeed chosen years back for this great mission. The Episcopal Ordination ceremony of Mar Kalluvelil at the Canadian Coptic Centre in Mississauga, Ontario was on September 19th. This historic event was witnessed by more than 1,000 attendees as well as many other viewers around the world through live telecast by Shalom TV. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Community along with all other Kerala Catholic communities here, thank and praise God for all His blessings. They submit themselves, to all God’s future plans in store for them, their next generations and through them for Canada. All continue to pray that Holy Spirit guide Mar Kalluvelil as he reaches out to the faithful settled in various provinces and cities of Canada. May Jesus work through Mar Kalluvelil and all faithful entrusted under his pastoral care, to strengthen God’s Kingdom in Canada. “We know that God makes all things to work for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

The Motto of the Bishop, “For the Glory of God” derives from Christ’s promise: Strive first for the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”(Mt 6:33)

The Coat of Arms of Bishop Jose Kalluvelil is a blend of nine different images:

  •  The twelve stars stand for the strong mediation of the Blessed Mother Mary in Revelation chapter 12.
  • The worshipping community with raised hands represent the Syro Malabar faithful in Canada and indicates the Bishop’s zeal for a collaborative ministry involving Clergy, Religious and all the People of God.
  • The Maple Leaf signifies Canada, the nation where the community has migrated to.
  • The pierced Heart of Jesus is the symbol of God’s love, and everyone is drawn closer by the love of Christ.
  • The hand touching the Heat of Jesus represents St. Thomas the Apostle from whom the Syro-Malabar Church traces its origin.
  • The Crosier stands for Pastoral care for the faithful and the Apostolic Leadership.
  • The Holy Bible is the symbol of faith transmission and testimony
  • The Dove at the top represents the indwelling and empowering of the Holy Spirit to continue the Ministry of Jesus the Good Shepherd.

Bishop is called to form the people of God after the Sacred Heart of Jesus and lead them to Heavenly Bliss. To fulfill these duties “For the Glory of God’ in existing Canadian scenario he should be guided by the Word of God, protected by Mother Mary and anointed by the Holy Spirit.
