Family Apostolate

The Syro Malabar Apostolic Exarchate of Mississauga, Canada, was established on August 6, 2015, with Bishop Mar Jose Kalluvelil as the First Exarch. On June 1, 2016 Bishop instituted the Department of Family Apostolate, and appointed Fr. Jacob Edakalathur as the Director.  “The desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant , especially among young people, and this is an inspiration to the church” says Pope Francis quoting the Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.(Amoris Laetitia, No.1) In the Sacrament of marriage, Christ the Lord makes himself present to the spouses and remains with them. The spouses are consecrated and by means of a special grace they build up the Body of Christ and form a domestic church (Lumen Gentium, 11) The church is a family of families, constantly enriched by the lives of all those domestic churches. Therefore, the safeguarding of the Lord’s gift in the Sacrament of Marriage is a concern not only of the individuals but of the entire church. (Bishops Synod 2015) Therefore we need to help the young people discover the dignity and beauty of marriage. The Family apostolate in the exarchate of Mississauga gives attention to prepare the young people for marriage and help them to understand the meaning of Sacrament of marriage, responsible parenthood, life-long commitment and related subjects. So also outreach programmes are conducted for those who are already married and empower them in Christian values and their commitment. We give importance for the family units (kudumba koottayma) in the parishes where importance is given for adult catechism. We welcome you all so that you shall grow in the fullness of God’s grace and live according to His call.
